And many people come across it without looking for it, when they see &#8220;mandrillapp.com&#8221; in an email.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Mandrill?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a platform for sending <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/transactional-email\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transactional emails<\/a>: the messages a website or an app sends automatically when the user does something.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mailchimp launched it in 2012 as a standalone service. For years it had a free plan that was very popular with developers and software companies.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That changed in 2016. According to MediaPost, Mailchimp turned it into a paid add-on for its accounts.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From March of that year, new accounts needed a paid Mailchimp plan. Existing ones had until the end of April to merge or move to another provider. Since then, it can&#8217;t be purchased on its own.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is mandrillapp.com and why does it appear in my emails?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>mandrillapp.com is Mandrill&#8217;s domain.<\/strong> If you see it in an email, the company or app writing to you uses this service to send its emails.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can appear in several places:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Next to the sender.<\/strong> Gmail sometimes shows &#8220;via mandrillapp.com&#8221; when the sending domain doesn&#8217;t match the <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/sender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sender<\/a>&#8216;s. This usually happens when the company hasn&#8217;t authenticated its domain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In the links.<\/strong> The service can rewrite the email&#8217;s links to count clicks. That&#8217;s why you see a mandrillapp.com address when you hover over them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In the technical headers.<\/strong> When you view the original message, its servers and signatures show up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An email going through Mandrill doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s fraudulent. Many software tools use it for their notifications.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it doesn&#8217;t make it safe either. If you weren&#8217;t expecting the message, check the sender&#8217;s address and don&#8217;t click or share any data until you&#8217;ve verified it. You need to authenticate your domain.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since March 15, 2024, Mailchimp requires every sending domain to have two <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/dkim-domainkeys-identified-mail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DKIM<\/a> records and a <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/dmarc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DMARC<\/a> policy. Via <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/api\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">API<\/a>, to integrate it into your app&#8217;s code.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or via <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/smtp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SMTP<\/a>, with the smtp.mandrillapp.com server, ports 25, 587, 2525 or 465 and an API key as the password.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also lets you use <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/email-template\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">templates<\/a> created in Mailchimp. It reports deliveries and <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/bounce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bounces<\/a> through <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/webhook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">webhooks<\/a> and shows statistics for each send.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much does Mandrill cost in 2026?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mandrill has no free plan.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To use it you need two things: a paid Mailchimp plan (Standard or Premium) and sending blocks. The Essentials plan won&#8217;t do.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each block lets you send 25,000 emails a month. Standard starts at about $20 a month for 500 contacts.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the smallest transactional setup costs at least about $40 a month.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are more details worth knowing. Emails you don&#8217;t use in a month don&#8217;t roll over to the next. And when your blocks run out, sending stops unless you turn on automatic purchasing.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/dedicated-ip-email-marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dedicated IP<\/a> costs $29.95 a month.
