It&#8217;s used in emails and messages to share something worth knowing that doesn&#8217;t call for a reply.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s one of the most common abbreviations in work email. It shows up at the start of a message, in the subject line or right before forwarding an email to a colleague.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does FYI mean?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FYI comes from <em>for your information<\/em>. It&#8217;s used with the same meaning as phrases like these:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;For your information.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Just so you know.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Passing this on so you have it.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;For information purposes.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key thing about FYI is that it <strong>asks for nothing<\/strong>. The recipient only has to read it. They don&#8217;t need to reply or do anything, unless the message says otherwise.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s an old abbreviation. An &#8220;FYI&#8221; with an urgent request inside will make your request go unnoticed.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When it&#8217;s better not to use FYI<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FYI is handy, but it&#8217;s not always the best option:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When you need a reply.<\/strong> If you expect someone to do something, don&#8217;t mark it as FYI. Say so clearly and give a date.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In a formal email.<\/strong> In a <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/blog\/2023\/01\/31\/how-to-write-a-formal-email\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">formal email<\/a>, &#8220;for your information&#8221; or &#8220;please note that\u2026&#8221; reads better.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>With someone who doesn&#8217;t know the abbreviation.<\/strong> Outside the office, many people don&#8217;t know what it means. Writing it out in full is just as clear and leaves no room for doubt.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To forward without context.<\/strong> A long email forwarded with just &#8220;FYI&#8221; forces the reader to go through all of it to work out what matters.
