Another piece of your content, which had held steady on Google for months, starts to drop. And the new one never quite takes off either. Chances are your own pages are competing with each other.

What is keyword cannibalization?

Keyword cannibalization happens when several pages on your website compete with each other. They all try to rank for the same search, with the same intent.

The search engine can’t tell which of them is the most relevant. So it may switch back and forth between them, or split the ranking strength between them. The usual result is that none of them reaches the position a single, well-crafted page would achieve.

It’s a common SEO problem on content-heavy websites, such as blogs, online stores or sites that have been publishing for years.

Why it hurts your rankings

Google doesn’t penalize you for having several pages on the same topic. The damage comes from the confusion they create.

If two URLs compete for the same keyword, the external links you receive are split between them. The same goes for the link juice from your internal linking. Instead of concentrating strength on a single page, you divide it.

On top of that, Google may show the less suitable page. For example, an old, outdated article instead of your most complete guide. That lowers your CTR and conversions.

And there’s a newer effect. AI-powered answer engines also look for a clear source for each question. If your website offers several similar versions, you’re less likely to be chosen as a reference, which is key in AEO.

When it’s cannibalization and when it’s not

This is where most mistakes are made. Two pages sharing a word doesn’t mean they’re cannibalizing each other.

What matters is search intent. If each page meets a different need, they can coexist without any problem.

These examples make it clear:

This is cannibalization: “how to make a newsletter” and “steps to create a newsletter”. Anyone searching for either one wants the same thing: a practical guide.

This is not cannibalization: “what is a newsletter” and “the best newsletter templates”. The first is looking for a definition; the second, resources to download.

This is cannibalization: two almost identical product pages in an online store that differ only in color.

This is not cannibalization: a glossary entry that defines a concept and a blog guide that explains how to apply it, as long as each one targets its own intent and they link to each other.

Sometimes Google shows two results from your website for the same search. If both rank well, it’s not a problem. Quite the opposite: you take up more space in the SERPs.

Most common causes

Keyword cannibalization is rarely intentional. It usually builds up over time, for one of these reasons:

Publishing without checking what already exists: after years of blogging, it’s easy to write about the same topic twice.

Very similar content: articles that cover the same subject with different titles but the same answer.

Category and tag pages: in a CMS like WordPress, they can compete with the articles they group together.

Duplicate landing pages: each campaign creates its own landing page with the same message, and they all end up indexed.

Messy internal linking: if you use the same anchor text to link to different pages, you confuse the search engine.

Warning signs

Some clues suggest there may be keyword cannibalization. The clearest one is that, for the same search, the URL that shows up on Google changes every few days.

You should also be suspicious if a page loses rankings right after you publish a similar one. Or if you see several of your URLs in positions 15 or 20, but none on the first page.

Want to see, step by step, how to detect it with Search Console and other tools? We explain it in our guide on SEO cannibalization and how to fix it.

How to prevent it from the start

Avoiding keyword cannibalization is much easier than fixing it later. The key is planning.

Before creating new content, do some keyword research and assign each main search to a single URL. This keyword map will serve as a reference for the whole team.

Also check your own website to see whether you already have something on that topic. If you do, it may be better to update and expand that content instead of starting from scratch.

And make the most of long tail variations. Instead of repeating the same keyword, create pages that answer more specific questions and link to them from your main content.

Once the problem already exists, the most common solutions are merging content, redirecting the redundant page or using canonical tags. Each one has its moment, and we cover them in detail in the blog guide.

Cannibalization and email marketing

Although it may seem like a purely SEO issue, it also affects your campaigns. Many companies create a different landing page for each send. If they all get indexed with nearly identical copy, they compete with each other on Google.

A good practice is to use a single main page for each offer or resource. Temporary variations of your campaigns can be set to noindex.

How we help you at Mailrelay

At Mailrelay, we make it easy for you to promote your content without relying solely on Google. The problem is that your pages split the authority between them, and none of them ranks as well as it could.

Is it bad to have two pages in the results for a search? No, as long as both rank well and meet different needs. It’s a sign of authority on the topic.

How often should you check for it? On content-heavy websites, a review every few months is enough. And always before publishing an article on a topic you’ve already covered.

In conclusion

Keyword cannibalization is, above all, an organization problem. It appears when content grows without a clear plan for which page should rank for each search.

Assign one intent to each URL and review what you already have before publishing. That way, you’ll stop your own pages from competing with each other. As a result, each piece of content can perform at its best.

Related entries

UCEPROTECT

UGC (User Generated Content)

Upselling

Web Usability

USP (Unique Selling Proposition)

UTM

Vendor lock in

Find out how Mailrelay can help you with your email marketing strategy.

["post-64053","glossary","type-glossary","status-publish","hentry

Keyword cannibalization: what it is and examples

<meta name="description" content="Keyword cannibalization happens when several pages on your website compete for the same search.
