It is used mainly in digital advertising: search ads, social media ads, Google Shopping and programmatic advertising.

It answers a specific question: does this campaign sell enough to justify what it costs?

ROAS formula

ROAS = revenue generated by advertising / advertising spend

The result can be expressed in three ways. Sales coming from those ads add up to €15,500. The result is 15,500 / 6,250 = 2.48.

An online academy spends €800 on social media ads and sells 20 courses at €120 each. Revenue: €2,400. 2,400 / 800 = 3.

A cosmetics store compares two campaigns. Campaign A has a return of 5 and campaign B, 2. With the same budget, A generates more than twice as many sales.

For the calculation to be reliable, the revenue must be what the advertising actually brought in. Ad and analytics tools use an attribution model to decide which sale belongs to each campaign.

ROAS vs. ROI: differences

They are often confused, but they don’t measure the same thing.

ROAS

ROI

What it measures

Revenue per euro of advertising

Profit per euro invested

Costs it takes into account

Ad spend only

All of them: product, shipping, staff, tools…

Formula

Revenue / ad spend

(Profit − investment) / investment

What it’s for

Comparing campaigns and ads

Knowing whether the business makes money

A high ROAS doesn’t guarantee a profit. If your margins are small, a campaign with a return of 3 can make you lose money. That’s why you should also look at ROI.

Don’t lose the visits you pay for

Capture the email of people who arrive from your ads with a Mailrelay form and keep talking to them without paying for another click.

Create a free account

What is a good ROAS?

There is no single figure that works for everyone. It depends on your profit margin.

The starting point is your minimum ROAS, or break-even ROAS. It’s the one that keeps you from losing money on advertising:

Minimum ROAS = 1 / profit margin

If you earn 25% on each sale, your minimum ROAS is 1 / 0.25 = 4. Below 4, every sale you get through ads costs you money.

Profit margin

Minimum ROAS

20 %

5

25 %

4

40 %

2,5

50 %

2

Staying below the minimum can make sense in a campaign to acquire new customers, if you know they will buy again. That’s where customer lifetime value comes in.

How to improve ROAS

1. Refine your targeting. Show your ads to the people most likely to buy.

2. Improve the landing page. A fast, clear landing page with a single call to action turns more visits into sales.

3. Test variations. Compare copy, images and offers, and keep what works best.

4. Increase the order value. Bundles, free shipping above a certain amount or complementary products raise the average order value.

5. Drop what doesn’t sell. Pause the keywords, audiences or ads that don’t reach the minimum.

6. Measure properly. Use UTM parameters and check that conversions are tracked correctly.

7. Win back those who didn’t buy. Many visitors who arrive from an ad don’t buy the first time. If you get their email, you can keep talking to them without paying for the click again.

ROAS and email marketing

Email isn’t pay-per-click advertising, but it has a big influence on the return of your ads:

It turns the click into a contact. A form or a welcome discount on the landing page captures the email of visitors who aren’t ready to buy yet.

It recovers carts. An abandoned cart email closes sales that the ad started.

It brings customers back to buy again. Every repeat purchase that comes through email makes the customer you acquired with advertising more profitable.

It measures its own return. Using the same logic, you can divide the revenue from your email campaigns by what they cost you. It’s a simple way to see the profitability of email marketing.

Common mistakes

Confusing revenue with profit. A return of 3 can be a loss if your margins are low.

Looking only at the short term. A customer who buys once and then ten more times is worth more than the first sale.

Over-attributing sales. If every channel claims the same sale, the total doesn’t match your actual revenue.

Comparing different industries. A return of 2 can be excellent in one business and poor in another.

Forgetting hidden costs. Ad design, agencies and tools are also part of the investment.

How Mailrelay helps you

With Mailrelay you can capture the email of visitors who arrive from your ads, send cart reminders and automate the emails that get your customers to buy again.
