Gmail is Google’s free email service, with 15 GB of storage and access from your browser or its mobile app.<\/p>\n\n

Chances are you have an account. It is estimated to have more than 1.8 billion users, which makes it the most common destination for any newsletter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

That’s why it pays to know it well, whether you use it every day or send campaigns to your customers.<\/p>\n\n

What is Gmail and what is it used for?<\/h2>\n\n

It is a web-based email service<\/a>, known as webmail<\/a>. You don’t need to install anything: you sign in with your Google account and read, write and organize your messages from any device.<\/p>\n\n

The name comes from “Google Mail”. It is written with a capital G, as one word, and addresses have the format name@gmail.com.<\/p>\n\n

Google launched it on April 1, 2004. Many people thought it was an April Fools’ joke, because it offered 1 GB of storage when a few megabytes was the norm.<\/p>\n\n

It was created by Paul Buchheit and remained in beta until July 2009.<\/p>\n\n

Today it does much more than send and receive email. It is connected to Google Drive, Calendar, Meet and Contacts, so from your inbox you can save attachments, accept meetings or start a video call.<\/p>\n\n

A note on storage: the 15 GB is for your entire Google account. If your phone uploads photos to Google Photos, that uses up space for your email too.<\/p>\n\n

And one on AI: on free personal accounts, some Gemini features are only available in the United States. The rest require a paid Google plan.<\/p>\n\n

How does Gmail work?<\/h2>\n\n

Google’s email service receives your messages and sorts them automatically. Messages from people you know go to “Primary”, and offers and newsletters go to “Promotions”.<\/p>\n\n

And anything that looks like spam<\/a> ends up in its own folder, out of sight.<\/p>\n\n

To decide, it analyzes who is sending the email, whether the domain is authenticated and how other users react to those messages. It also learns from you: if you always open a brand’s emails, it will place them better.<\/p>\n\n

You can adjust this sorting. With labels you group messages by topic, and with filters you decide what to do with each email as soon as it arrives: archive it, mark it as important or forward it.<\/p>\n\n
