Once downloaded, they can be read on that device, even offline.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is one of the two protocols for receiving email. The other is <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/imap\/\">IMAP<\/a>, which leaves the messages on the server and syncs them across devices. Sending relies on a third protocol, <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/smtp\/\">SMTP<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does &#8220;Personal (POP3)&#8221; mean?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you add an email account manually in some Android apps, the app asks what type of account it is. Three options usually appear: <strong>&#8220;Personal (POP3)&#8221;<\/strong>, <strong>&#8220;Personal (IMAP)&#8221;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;Exchange&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Personal (POP3):<\/strong> the phone downloads the emails and stores them on the phone itself. What you do on the phone (reading, deleting or moving) is not reflected on your computer or in webmail.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Personal (IMAP):<\/strong> the emails stay on the server. If you read or delete a message on your phone, it also changes on your computer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exchange:<\/strong> for business accounts with Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft 365.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are going to check your email from both your phone and your computer, choose IMAP. POP3 only makes sense if you use a single device or want to keep a local copy of everything.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does POP3 work?<\/h2>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The email program connects to the incoming email server with your username and password.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It downloads the new messages to the device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depending on the settings, it deletes the messages from the server or leaves a copy there for a while.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It closes the connection. Also, since January 2026 Gmail no longer fetches email from other accounts via POP: you have to use IMAP or the Gmail app.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to set up a POP3 account<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need the following details, which your email provider gives you:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Incoming email server (POP3):<\/strong> for example, pop.yourdomain.com.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Port:<\/strong> 995 with SSL\/TLS (recommended) or 110 unencrypted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Username and password<\/strong> of the account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outgoing email server (<a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/smtp\/\">SMTP<\/a>)<\/strong>, with its <a href=\"https:\/\/mailrelay.com\/en\/glossary\/smtp-port\/\">port<\/a>, so you can send.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turn on the <strong>leave a copy on the server<\/strong> option if you want to keep seeing the emails in webmail.
