Verifying an email means checking, before you send anything to it, that the address is spelled correctly, that its domain receives email and that the mailbox exists.<\/strong> It keeps you from sending to addresses that will bounce and protects your sender reputation.<\/p>\n\n

A single mistyped address isn’t a problem. Hundreds of old or poorly collected addresses are: mailbox providers read those bounces as a sign that you don’t look after your list, and start sending your campaigns to spam<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

What does verifying an email mean?<\/h2>\n\n

The third check is the most useful. The verifier “knocks on the door” of the recipient’s email server<\/a>, asks whether that mailbox exists and says goodbye before delivering anything.<\/p>\n\n

Validating an email is often used as a synonym for verifying it. Sometimes “validate” is kept for the format check and “verify” for the mailbox check, but in practice the tools do both.<\/p>\n\n

If you only have one or two doubtful addresses, you don’t need any paid tool.<\/p>\n\n

  1. Check how it’s spelled.<\/strong> Most errors are typos: “gmial”, “hotmial”, “.con” instead of “.com” or an extra dot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Check the domain.<\/strong> If it’s a company, open its website. If it doesn’t load or the domain is for sale, the email address very likely doesn’t work either.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Use a free online verifier.<\/strong> Almost all of them let you check a few addresses a day without signing up. They’ll tell you whether the mailbox is valid, invalid or risky.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Send a test message.<\/strong> If the address doesn’t exist, within a few minutes you’ll get an automatic error reply, a hard bounce<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n
