This means some messages are waiting to retry delivery at the request of the receiving server.

Why can emails get stuck in the queue?

Usually, emails get queued for one of these reasons:

Occasional incidents at Mailrelay:

Anything from a Wi-Fi outage to a system failure can cause a scheduled message to get queued. Check whether your computer or phone has a poor connection.

Queued emails in Gmail: rejections due to sending volume:

This usually happens with large ISPs such as Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo!, etc., since smaller ones don’t usually have the technical infrastructure to block messages.

These rejections aren’t usually permanent; what happens is that delivery is much slower and the emails stay as queued emails or messages in Gmail.

SPAM-related rejections:

When we send a bulk email campaign, the content of the emails and the way subscribers react to them are analyzed little by little. That’s exactly what this slower delivery flow is for: to examine our campaign closely.

If they notice that users reject our content as unwanted or harmful, our messages will probably be considered spam, and any queued message or email we have will be put on hold.

The emails usually end up being delivered, unless one of the large ISPs blocks the sending IP, in which case the campaign does come to a halt.

It’s not common, but it can happen.

How to fix queued emails or messages [Solutions for getting your messages sent]

Well, on the one hand, it’s not something that happens often. On the other hand, we can’t prevent it 100%. But here are some options:

The first thing to do is wait, about four hours or so, and then check the status of the campaign:

If we see fewer “queued” emails, we’ll keep waiting, since delivery is in progress

If the number of “queued” emails hasn’t gone down, we’ll contact support

How can we prevent this from happening with our newsletters?

Keep in mind that Mailrelay’s IPs are shared (although you can actually get dedicated IPs). Because they’re shared, the campaigns of your IP “neighbors” affect your own campaigns.

However, if we all follow email marketing best practices, we all benefit and avoid creating queued emails.

Sending mailings at a volume that suits our reputation and doing everything we can to avoid being marked as SPAM will help not only us but also our IP neighbors.

Remember that your sending domain can be blocked. In the article “Why we shouldn’t use newly registered domains as senders” we already shared some tips on this.

In the end, it’s all about following the usual best practices.

Conclusions on Queued Emails at Mailrelay

So, to answer the question of why emails get stuck in the queue: it’s mainly due to a sending volume that is too high for the reputation of the IP or domain, or to our having been marked as SPAM a large number of times. We’ll check the status of the campaign and, if time goes by and the emails still haven’t been delivered, we’ll contact support.

Is it possible to delete queued emails?

By default, it’s not possible to delete the sending queue and stop the emails from being delivered later, when the receiving server finally accepts them. But there are times when this is necessary, for example with a time-limited promotion or when local laws prohibit sending after a certain time of day. If this is your case, contact us and we can enable a button in your dashboard to delete queued emails manually.

This problem is usually related to deliverability in email marketing in general: the better you take care of these aspects, the fewer emails will get stuck in the queue.

If you want to send emails to your subscriber list, Mailrelay offers you up to 80,000 emails per month to up to 20,000 subscribers for free, so you can sell at zero cost.
