Workshop

What is a workshop? Hands-on specialized training

A workshop is a short, hands-on training session. In digital marketing, workshops are specialized sessions where attendees receive intensive practical and theoretical training on a specific topic to help them perform better in their work.

Workshops are led by an expert in the subject who acts as a facilitator. They are short, designed for small groups rather than large audiences, and always include time to put what has been learned into practice.

1. Benefits of workshops

As specialized training sessions, workshops obviously improve participants’ skills and knowledge. But they also offer several other benefits:

  • In-depth training on a specific topic. Attendees receive intensive, high-value training on a very focused subject.
  • They encourage creativity and innovation. The hands-on part, which every workshop should include, lets participants apply what they’ve learned, sparks creativity and strengthens their ability to innovate.
  • They are led by experts. Speakers are always experts, which guarantees high-quality learning. They also give attendees the foundations and tools to keep learning.
  • They boost teamwork. They help participants build connections that make it easier to work together, both during and after the workshop.

2. How to create a workshop

Creating a workshop doesn’t have to be complicated if you’re clear about the steps. Here are the essential ones, in the best chronological order:

  • Analyze needs and goals. Always consider the profile of the people who will attend, the needs they want to cover and whether they’ll get real value from it. Also check that the workshop will meet the goals they expect.
  • Choose a specific topic. Workshops usually cover topics that give attendees a certain level of specialization or show the latest developments on a very specific subject, always presented in an engaging way.
  • Set the length. Although it varies a lot, as a general rule a workshop shouldn’t last more than four hours, or attendees may lose interest.
  • Provide materials. Whether digital or printed, give attendees all the materials they need so they can go home able to expand on what they’ve learned and with the satisfaction of having learned something new.
  • Define the facilitator’s role. The facilitator and speaker should make learning happen. Their main role is to reinforce knowledge and encourage participation.
  • The hands-on part is a must. Always include a practical session where attendees can apply what they’re learning. It should encourage a productive attitude so the workshop is both educational and fun.
  • Choose a date and venue. Both are vital, because together they determine whether people can attend. It’s also a good idea to choose a venue outside the usual workplace, so the workshop isn’t associated with day-to-day work and the right learning atmosphere is created.
