Favicon

What is a favicon?

A favicon is a small icon, usually 16×16 or 32×32 pixels in size, which is displayed next to the name of the tabs that are open in the web browser. It is a visual element that is widely used so that users can quickly identify the site to which each of the open tabs belongs.

If you look at the tab that is currently open, in the top left-hand corner, next to the title of this website, you will see that our favicon is a blue and white envelope, which is the Mailrelay company logo.

1. use of favicons

Not everyone ads a favicon on their site, and it’s common to find many blogs that don’t bother to set it up and instead leave the default favicon from their CMS, WordPress, Joomla or Prestashop. However, it is advisable to use a personalized favicon because:

  • It conveys your brand image when someone is browsing your site.
  • Pages will be easier to identify when several tabs are open.
  • When the page is bookmarked, it is easier to identify and visit it again.

2. Tips for creating a favicon

Before creating a favicon, whether for a web or desktop application, it is advisable to consider the following factors, as it will project your brand image:

– It should be easily recognizable. Try to use a reduced version of your logo or elements that associate it with your brand.

– Above all, keep it simple. The small size of a favicon doesn’t allow for complicated designs, so give priority to legibility and simplicity.

– Attractive and eye-catching. Try to give it a shape and color that makes it stand out from the rest of the tabs.

– Formats and sizes. The ideal graphic format for a favicon is .png (transparencies allowed), but it can also be .ico, .png, .jpg, .gif and .svg. The standard size is 16×16 pixels with a resolution of 72 pixels/inch, in RGB mode and with a depth of 32 bits.

3. How do I change the favicon in WordPress?

The use of WordPress is very widespread and not everyone takes the trouble to change the favicon on a site created with WordPress, although this is very easy to do.

To change the favicon in WordPress, simply go to the menu on the left and select: Apariencia>>Personalizar. This will open the theme’s customization editor.

Now, in the left-hand column, select: Cabecera>>Identidad del sitio and scroll down to Icono del sitio. In this section, select: Cambiar La Imagen, select your favicon and upload it. And that’s it.
